The Healthy Housing Programme - synergies in health and housing
The Healthy Housing programme is a joint project between a number of housing and health authorities to reduce the risk of housing-related diseases among families living in Housing New Zealand Corporation properties.
The programme was established in response to research which showed that the most important risk factor for meningococcal disease among Auckland children was over-crowded homes.
Under the programme communities with known high rates of over-crowding and over-crowding related diseases are helped to access primary health care services and facilities.
So far the programme has been run in 2,000 homes in Otara, Mangere, Onehunga, Wiri, Glen Innes, Pt England and Northland and has resulted in improved access to primary health care and a reduction in over-crowding.
